“Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”
Personal Statement from Sydney: “What I personally have always loved about volleyball is that I am able to do something I am passionate about while getting great exercise. My goal as a coach is to make players sweat, while strengthening technical and mental skills. A solid mechanical foundation allows a player to grow to be strategically clever. My hope is that all players will be hard-working, learn to be a good team player, and most importantly – come to love the sport that I have loved for so long.”
High School & College Degrees:
I graduated from Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, CA in 2014. I was in the scholar’s program for honors all four years and received the life sciences award at graduation. I was a member of the Interact Rotaract Club for 2 years. I currently attend UC Santa Cruz and will graduate with a degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology in spring 2018. At UCSC, I volunteer at our on-campus center for students struggling with addiction and recovery. I also volunteer at Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center. I am a member of the UCSC chapter of Camp Kesem, a national nonprofit organization run by college students that puts on a free week of summer camp for kids affected by a parent’s cancer.
High School Playing Experience:
I played 2 years of JV women’s volleyball at Christian Brothers as a middle and 2 years of varsity volleyball as a middle/right side.
Club Playing Experience:
I played for Sac Sideout VBC as a middle from ages 11-14. My sophomore year of high school, I played for Five Starz VBC as a middle. My junior year and final year of club volleyball, I played for Synergy Force VBC as a middle/right side. That season we made it Junior Nationals in Dallas, TX.
College Playing Experience:
I walked onto the women’s volleyball team at UCSC my sophomore year as a middle/right side, but because of a knee injury I chose not to return the following years.
Beach Playing Experience:
I played sand volleyball for 1.5 years in high school and continue to play beach recreationally in Santa Cruz.
I assistant coached JV men’s volleyball at my high school in Sacramento for 2 years and women’s JV volleyball for 1 year. I also coached various volleyball camps throughout my high school career. This is my third year coaching for Club Cruz. For Club Cruz, I have coached beach summer camps for 2 years, indoor academies for 3 years now, and assistant coached the competitive 11’s team last season.
I am a full-time student which takes up most of the time, but I also work for UCSC’s Student Health Outreach and Promotion program as a peer educator for alcohol and other drugs. In my free time, I like to try new recipes for cooking and baking, go to the beach, and watch Netflix.
Why Club Cruz?
Club Cruz’s focus is on developing ALL players. Not all clubs do that. I love working with the coaching staff because it is so apparent that everyone cares about each individual player. I like that we rotate coaches often because I think it is important for kids to experience different styles of coaching and find what they like.
